News 14's Johnell Johnson has more on what the school system and police department plan to do to stop gang activity.
CHARLOTTE -- The fight against gang activity is an uphill one, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools superintendent Peter Gorman says it is one the school system and law enforcement can win.
As News 14 reported Sunday, young men in the Charlotte area are posting photographs of themselves carrying guns and flashing what appear to be gang signs on the popular social networking Web site, MySpace.com.
Gorman says he is not surprised by the potential for gang activity, but he says putting an end to it is on top of his priority list.
School and law enforcement officials say they are aware of what appear to be gang-related photos on MySpace.com.
"It's something that I find disturbing but I realized that this would be a challenge that I would face. Inappropriate behavior whether it be by kids in gangs is going on everywhere across the U.S.,” Gorman said. “The only thing I can tell you is the worst thing you can do is pretend it's not going on or have parents saying ‘Oh, my kids wouldn't do that.’"
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says it is well aware of the MySpace pages and is working with the school system to prevent gang violence.
