Washington — The changing face of America is about to change again.

Sometime early next week, the Census Bureau says.
Sometime early next week, the Census Bureau says, the United States population will cross the 300-million mark. And that child most likely will be a Hispanic boy born in Los Angeles, predicts Richard Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution in Washington.
"What this represents is a return to the melting pot for America," Frey said.
The momentous turn of the Census Bureau's population clock — clicking over on its Web site (www.census.gov) at one new person every 11 seconds — will mark the latest progression that has seen the United States move in less than 100 years from a mostly white and European-derived population concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest to a colorful palette of Americans who increasingly speak Spanish and live in the cities of the South and West.
In 1915, when the U.S. population reached 100 million on the crest of a wave of immigration, most American children were born in working-class or rural households. The largest group of immigrants came from Germany.
the 200 million mark, immigration was low, the nation was increasingly middle class, Baby Boom families filled new suburbs and the Sunbelt was drawing growing numbers of people.
Today, Mexico and India are the largest sources of immigrants, driving a rapid increase in ethnic diversity, particularly in the still fast-expanding suburbs. More than 34 million U.S. residents were born somewhere else, the largest number in history
