GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - A former member of the street gang MS-13 has testified against members of the group facing federal charges in suburban Maryland.
Noe "Shorty" Cruz is a Salvadoran immigrant who joined the gang in El Salvador as a teenager says he turned against the gang after the 2003 murder of a friend, who was also in the gang.
The Washington Post reports that Cruz wore a wire for federal investigators. His work contributed to the indictment of 22 alleged gang members who are charged with racketeering. The indictment accuses the gang of six homicides and four attempted murders in Prince George's and Montgomery counties.
Cruz testified in federal court in Greenbelt that members of MS 13 robbed prostitution houses and sent money to gang leaders in El Salvador.
Cruz has been relocated by federal authorities.
