(CNSNews.com) - Bullets land near William Hodges whenever drug runners from Mexico want to clear areas that are used for trafficking illicit material into the U.S.
But the Arizona rancher now expects to see the criminal activity that cuts across his property wane in the months ahead, and he credits the Minuteman Civil Defense Corp -- the group devoted to limiting the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S. Construction has begun on a new 14-foot-tall border fence that covers a one-mile piece of land in Cochise County that runs up against the border with Mexico.
"I do believe that if they (the drug runners) wanted to kill me, they could," he said. "They are far enough away that I hear the bullets land first, then I hear the gun."
The Minuteman fence on the Hodges property will exist in two parts. The front section is a "fomguard" fiber optic fence that includes sensors and cameras. It will be backed up by a 14-foot high "Israeli Style" barrier sturdy enough to stop cars and trucks. The second layer of the wall includes steel wires and is embedded three feet into the ground.
