SMITHFIELD, N.C. - A former fifth-grade teacher was arrested Friday for allegedly having * with an 11-year-old student three years ago.
Rebecca Withrow, 30, of Clayton, was charged with first degree rape of a child, indecent liberties with a child, and * offense with a student, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell said. Withrow was being held on $750,000 bond.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to this family, especially this young boy," Bizzell said.
Withrow, who had been assigned to tutor the boy, allegedly had * with the fifth grader repeatedly between February and June 2003, usually during school hours, at Polenta Elementary School, Bizzell said.
Withrow, who was 26 at the time, had worked at the school since August 2001. She also served as the school's PTA president.
The boy's mother complained to school administrators and to the sheriff's office in late September, Bizzell said. Johnston County Schools officials said Withrow resigned Wednesday for personal reasons.
