Who or what is to blame for the high cost of gas. Please share your thoughts.

I think it's defenetly Bush's fault, he was the one who torqued all of the other countries off and they stopped selling us the gass. i think that what he needs to do is build refineries up and down the coast, if you think about it that would not just lower gass prices it would create more jobs for americans, witch it seems that Bush is going out of his way to do.

I think it is greed-- pure and simple--by the oil companies and Bush just sits back and lets them rake it in while we peons struggle to chunk out fifty dollars for a tank of gas. SOMETHING could be done about it but, when the CEO's of these huge oil companies are getting $400 MILLION severance pay packages, SOMEONE is going to have to pay for it. Guess who???!!

The 'oil shortages' and their inflationery effects is a tool the government has used on us for many many years. It's worked every time so far.

In the 80's there was an 'oil glut' that devastated five states...and maybe more than five...devastated them economically. Suddenly there were thousands of men out of work...thousands of small businesses dependent on the oil industry going kaput.

Having lived in and around the oil fields for more than half a century I can tell you flatly that there is NO OIL SHORTAGE. There is enough oil in the shale of Colorado alone to keep this country going for another 200 years..and yes we have the technology to extract it.

The 'oil shortage' is just a way to deal another severe blow to the middle class in America.

Like Lou Dobbs says, "the shrinking middle class". I guess it would be more appropriate to call it the "disappearing middle class".

I believe the deal with the shale is that they have to super heat the shale and then dump water on it to get the oil to rise to the top. They can then scoop off the oil but are left with massive quantities of poisoned water that they dont know what to do with. Im not an oil guy so correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure about the extraction methods. But you could totally eliminate the Colorado shale and just let the wells in Okla, Tex, N.Mex. La, etc flow. There are so many wells that were never put into production. So many wells that are allowed only the tiniest percent of their production capacity.

The oil companies never saw fit to invest in more refineries even tho demand was growing. Therefore they could charge more for what they produced. So the oil companies in cahoots with the government are jeopardizing out way of life without a backward glance.

Now we are at war (again) and this has a bearing on our national security, our ability to fight that war.

That's the infuriating thing about the way we are being ripped off. The oil companies SAY they have to charge these exhorbitant prices in order to reinvest in new technology but the money somehow is landing in the pockets of the executives and no new technology is being pursued.

Now if when the report on oil company profits had remained the same or were a bit less, then I would be alittle more ok with all this. Alittle. But, they made record profits at a time prices are suppose to be so high! We are being gauged. The government is and always has played these games with us. and in this instance take not of all the hugely important topics and problems that keep getting added to the pot every time Bush gets in hot water and needs higher ratings. I think it is one more attempt to sqeeze us into submission. One more attempt to distract us from illegal aliens and Iraq. One more attempt to overwhelm us so badly we just throw our hands up.

I think you're absolutely right. Just distract us from what's really going on right under our noses that we might be missing.

This is so true. When gas went up to three bucks a gallon last fall, it was funny that the west TX oil wells that were pumping 1 out of every five for years were all of a sudden pumping 4 out of 5.

Oil has hit a new high at $75.00 a barrel today. So that means the price of gasoline will likely go up in the morning.

Oh great! The price per barrel hadn't gone up but they still had to raise the price of gas before the 4th so now they have a good excuse to gouge us some more.

It IS. I used $35 worth in 5 days last week and I drive I little PT Cruiser!
Of course, that turbo engine with my lead foot doesn't help a lot either!
