LONGMONT — Early next year, Congress will re-engage in a debate over the DREAM Act: legislation that could help 65,000 U.S.-raised undocumented adolescent immigrants attend college each year.
If passed, the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act would offer in-state college tuition rates to undocumented high school graduates who were brought to the country at least five years ago and before they turned 16.
In 10 states, including California and Texas, qualified undocumented immigrants already have the option of in-state tuition at public universities. But in Colorado and 39 other states, the undocumented often face an educational dead end after high school.
Even if they were brought into the United States as babies and know no other language than English, no other culture but America’s, undocumented high school graduates must pay out-of-state tuition in 40 states. The cost is often three times as high.
At 16 credits a semester, a year’s tuition at the University of Colorado is about $8,078 for residents but $22,990 if you’re from another state or undocumented. At the Boulder County Campus of Front Range Community College, it’s $2,560 and $11,040.
Under the DREAM Act, all 50 states would have to offer in-state rates to qualified undocumented high school graduates.
DREAM Act opponents — including Longmont’s congressional representative, Marilyn Musgrave — say it would provide further incentives for immigrants to come here illegally.

I thought this was finally over. Why should a bill be passed that GIVES illegal aliens the right to in-state tuition? This 'Dream Act' is ridiculous! |
