JACKSONVILLE - Police have turned over four illegal immigrants who are alleged gang members to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Four Jacksonville residents, including a mother and her two sons, were detained in connection with gang activity in the city limits, said Chief Reece Daniel.

Police detained Maria Rangel, 40; Samuel Rangel, 25; Efrain Rangel, 22 and Jose Servin, 23, last week. They have all been scheduled to appear at deportation hearings in Dallas this week, said Detective Jason Price.

Daniel said Jacksonville police will crack down on gangs by using deportation as a threat.

"Basically, what this is, is that we're using whatever tools are available to us ... We're going to take advantage of the law, and those we can deport, we will. If they want to do that sort of thing, they can do that elsewhere, not there," he said.

Two gangs that occupy opposite ends of Tyler Street have been fighting for months, although Lt. John Page said that Jacksonville's gangs are disorganized and loosely associated with national gangs.

Before October, the last instance of gang violence occurred in January, when Ms. Rangel was shot in the knee by rival gang members.

Daniel said Ms. Rangel and her sons participated in the large gang brawl that happened on Tyler Street on Oct. 1 shortly before 19-year-old Sergio Galvan was shot once in the head. Police believe the fight may have led to his death. No one has been arrested in connection with his murder, Daniel said.
