A 63-year-old trucker from Kittrell was arrested and jailed in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 3 on eight counts of smuggling illegal Mexican immigrants in the tractor-trailer he was driving.
A spokeswoman for the Dallas Police Department said the rig operated by Daylon Ray Owens of 6575 Raleigh Road in Vance County contained a total of 300 pounds of marijuana divided into numerous bricks that were stuffed into three unlocked duffel bags.
Because investigators did not believe there was enough evidence to prove the bags belonged to Owens, he was not charged with possession.
The large quantities of marijuana were placed in the property room at the Dallas Police Department.
Owens, who was described as having an artificial right leg, was released from the jail the next day. He was then taken into custody by agents of the United States Immigra-tion and Naturalization Service.
It was mid-afternoon on Oct. 3 when witnesses notified a Dallas police officer working at an off-duty job that they had seen six men, a woman and a child get out of the cab of an 18-wheeler that had parked behind the Flying J Truck Stop on Interstate 20.
The officer kept the truck from leaving the scene until other members of the police department arrived.
