When Fontana senior Tiqueon Smith arrived for class on Monday the situation was markedly different than the pandemonium on Friday after hundreds of students threw rocks, bottles and fists during a lunchtime brawl.
"I'm here to pick up my nephew. He's just a freshman. I don't want him mixed up in this mess," said Smith.
Starting with the opening bell a ring of police cruisers encircled the sprawling campus. Twelve extra officers patrolled in addition to existing school police. School officials say there were no reported incidents during school hours.
Photo by Chris Levister - Classes at Fontana High School resumed on Monday under heavy police security. On Friday hundreds of students were involved in a racially-motivated brawl. Students and parents say tensions between Blacks and Latinos persist.
Outside the chained red metal gates surrounding the school's entrance parents and students from nearby schools waited nervously for the 2:24 closing bell.
"I'm scared," said Anselmo Flores. I want my sons out of here I want them to go to a school that is more safe."
Waiting for his nephew Tiqueon Smith talked about the long simmering racial tensions. He said issues between Black and Latino students have been around for years.

| butterbean, I fully expect in the near future that the school will erupt in a terrible violent confrontation next time with many students being killed or hurt. It really saddens me. |

tweety- you might be right. I really think that people are getting sick of the "dumbed down" education American students are getting, as a result of the illegal immigrants. Nothing less, nothing more.

African-Americans are just beginning to feel the impact. It amuses me that Hispanics have tried to cozy up to the Blacks, so they could make illegal immigration a racial issue. Statistics show that young black Americans are having the worst time finding jobs that pay at least a minimum wage. |

It amazes me that whites want to pit blacks against Hispanics considering that whites are the cause of many of the problems blacks face. Hispanics and blacks might have a minor problem when it comes to work, regardless of whether Hispanics are legal or undocumented. Hispanics are just favored more because they usually have more working experience. They put their backs into it. Blacks do too, but I've worked with blacks and most of the blacks I worked with complained over trivial things like scrubbing the bathrooms. Naturally, I had to do it, but you didn't see me managing the store. It was a black lady who usually liked to sit and chat with her other black friends, yet complained when I asked her for help when the store was overflowed with customers. Oh, yeah, they left early too, leaving me and the other Hispanic workers to clean up. I have no problems with blacks, but I have to admit that when it comes to working, the experience my husband and I have had with black co-workers hasn't been in their favor. |

Yeah, home schooling is going to be a normal thing very, very soon if we don't do something about all those white people who are coming into our schools and shooting, sexually molesting, and killing innocent children. When my daughter goes to her predominantly Hispanic headstart, I worry about some white idiot wanting to take the place hostage. I am considering home schooling her, considering that whites are spontaneous and might want to take up their issues with innocent little children in their schools. |

Oh, we're supposed to be counting them! Is the problem that they were in a row or that they weren't spaced out? Sorry, I just don't have the experience you guys do with this. I was just doing what you guys were doing, you know, generalizing.  |

| butterbean, as you know, Whites don't have to pit Blacks against Hispanics, they are doing it on their own. Boy thats really a stretch of racism when one has to blame the Whites for Black/Hispanic racism. LOL! It happens all the time in our So. Calif. schools now much like it used to be about White/Black racism. It is in the papers on a daily basis here. |
