Dallas school trustees on Thursday relaxed a year-old policy that had required some school principals to learn Spanish by 2008. The change takes the onus off principals, allowing assistant principals and, in some cases, counselors, to count toward the requirement.
The policy change, approved in a 6-2 vote after an hour of bitter public comment, didn't go far enough for several black people in attendance and didn't entirely appease Hispanics.
Hispanics who addressed trustees Thursday wanted the original policy kept intact. Several black audience members, on the other hand, denounced the policy as illegal, unfair and racist. They wanted the policy scrapped entirely.
Much of the public comment Thursday was heavy with racial overtones. One black speaker questioned the citizenship of the board's two Hispanic trustees and superintendent.
The policy "is evil to the black race and the black struggle," said another speaker, Shirley Daniels, who is black. "You [Hispanics] must stop being selfish. You never were oppressed. I studied it."
Hispanic activists said the policy is needed in a district whose enrollment is more than 65 percent Hispanic and 30 percent non-English-speaking.

American principals DO NOT NEED to learn spanish! Hispanics need to learn English. I am sick and tired of the PC crowd who want to appease Hispanics. |
