POMONA - With Democrats now making up the majority in both houses of Congress after the Nov. 7 elections, Inland Valley day laborers and immigrant advocates interviewed Wednesday said they hope federal immigration reform favorable to undocumented immigrants finally will happen.
But they aren't holding their breath.
With Democrats now in control, the Senate's immigration reform plan - which is endorsed by President Bush and includes a guest-worker component - appears to stand a better chance of becoming law than the House's version, which included tougher enforcement clauses and no guest-worker plan.
Those interviewed at the Pomona Economic Opportunity Center, also referred to as the Pomona Day Labor Center, weren't so sure, though:
"Whether (Governor Arnold) Schwarzenegger won here was not important. The federal elections, those are more important. Republicans don't want an integral immigration reform plan."
- Jaime Castro, Mira Loma, legal resident
"It's sort of hard to assess what's going to happen. There is certainly going to be a division within the (Democratic) party. There are a lot of issues they want to address before they take this one on."
- Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR)
"One always hopes some favorable reforms come about. We really don't know how things are going to turn out. All that's left to do is to wait and see."
- Jaime Arambul, Pomona, in the U.S. illegally
"You can see the change already. You can see (leaders) having conversations."
- Juan Medina, day labor center coordinator
"When they (politicians) are in the post, they end up doing everything to the contrary. ... Quite simply, all that they look for is a forum for them to be nominated, and then they forget everything they said."
- An unidentified worker

No matter how this turns out, I will never recognize illegals as citizens. To me, they are exasperating any chances of welcoming from most Americans. |
