President Bush and all the rest of the Free-traders are always talking about how we should get rid of trade barriers and how we should not let the horrors of Protectionism creep in. Well they need to put that argument right in the trash where it belongs. The other nations we trade with are all protectionist. China, Japan even Europe has Tarrifs on our goods. I say if these other nations want to do business here in the U.S. then they should pay for the privilege.
It may add cost to some products. But if they want to stay competetive they will have to keep there prices close to where they are at now.
The article below shows the example of Korea
| Quote: | Fields called on federal officials to press South Korea to lift trade barriers. He said fewer than 4,000 U.S.-built vehicles were permitted to be sold in Korea while Korean brands exported 730,000 vehicles to the United States.
Korean officials have previously said that their government does not discriminate against U.S. vehicles, noting that the customs tax on imported vehicles is lower than a similar tax levied by the European Union. They also have said that while the market share of imported vehicles in Korea continues to rise, many Korean consumers consider most U.S. vehicles too big.
The United States is negotiating a new trade agreement with Korea that would gradually reduce barriers between the two countries, similar to the North American Free Trade Agreement among the United States, Canada and Mexico. Earlier this month, Wagoner complained that Japan is manipulating its currency for trade advantages.
