S.F. works to care for all its uninsured
CITY'S PLAN WOULD BE FIRST IN THE NATION
By Mary Anne Ostrom
Mercury News
San Francisco, eager to put its stamp on the health care debate, unveiled an ambitious plan Tuesday that would make it the first city in the nation to provide every uninsured resident with access to medical services.
When the plan is rolled out next year, the city's 82,000 uninsured residents would become eligible for a wide array of benefits, regardless of employment or immigration status. The complex $200-million-a-year plan requires funding from existing government sources, uninsured residents who will pay based on income and a mandated contribution from all San Francisco employers with more than 20 workers. |

| This would be the best news I could hear if that happened in North Carolina. If something isn't done about the health care crisis in this country, we won't have to worry about illegal aliens, terrorists or anything else. |

Boy this sounds socialistic, doesn't it?
Force the small business owner to pay? Come on where is the justice in that? Why should someone who took a risk and started a business be forced to pick up the tab for others?
Yes, we need healthcare reform or rather insurance reform but this is NOT America! Dictating to the small business owner that he MUST pay this!!!
p.s. I am a small business owner.
And I pay high premiums with high deductibles. I do not however, think other should pay the bill!
We need lawsuit reform to get these premiums down. And we need people to monitor their bills as well. Overcharges happen all the time because people don't care since they aren't paying the bill.
And we need to put people in groups to also further lower the premiums! Am I on a leftist website??? |

I have my own idea of the perfect plan that would solve the problem for individuals like me who are having to pay a FORTUNE for health insurance and for people like you who own small businesses. I have hammered my representatives with my plan to no avail. My plan would be to open up the government's health care plan to anyone who wanted to join. We would pay our own premiums BUT at group rates in a very large group where the costs would be spread out.
I don't expect nor want a handout but I do expect to get a leg up. One of the main reasons our health care is so expensive is that the illegals are sucking the systems dry and WE, the insured, are the ones paying for it. |

It is once again the illegal part I find disturbing. I beleive everyone in this country that are citizens legaly should have health care. I believe the illegals and medical gouging of medicade/medicare patients has driven up the costs. I do believe that with the resources this country has, and if they scaled foreign aid way down, we would be able to cover every single American with health insurance. Be it in the massive group policy you speak of Bootsie but, also for those who cannot pay. Hell we are already doing that for the illegals! I suppose medical care could be viewed by some as socialist since we know of socialist countries who have this practice. However I do not think full medical for every American citizen is the definition of socialism.
I am just a firm beleiver that no one in this wealthy country should ever have to worry about their health due to lack of medical care. Nor should they be forced into bankruptcy for the medical debt they incure. The way it is and has been just seems a bit barbaric to me in this day and age. We should be able to take care of our own. And what that covers is affordable medical treatment, food and housing. There are many ways to do that if the hand outs to other countries stopped. |

| That's exactly right, DReam. I don't consider it socialistic either to take care of the health of the American people. I don't care HOW they do it but something has GOT to be done because it is wiping people out. If they want to call it socialized medicine, go for it. I just want to stop paying almost $700 a MONTH for a POOR POLICY. |
