Once again the government is forced to engage in damage control because of large-scale ineptitude by the bureaucrats and agencies that are charged with aspects of national security. This time the Washington Times reports the loss of TSA uniforms and official identity cards. The report notes that at least 426 uniforms and identification cards issued to baggage screeners have been lost or stolen at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshal International Airport since 2001. But perhaps we should not be critical of the goings on at that airport. After all, Los Angeles International Airport has lost a grand total of 789 uniforms and ID badges- which far and away eclipses the magnitude of Marshal’s *-up. Other airports report smaller but nevertheless, worrying losses as well.
Of course, the incompetent bureaucracy refuses to admit that anything is amiss. They say that there is nothing to worry about. To quote from the article:
"This is not a security threat," agency spokeswoman Amy Kudwa said. "One number of a combination of a bank vault won't get you access inside, and a TSA ID card or uniform will not allow you access at the airport either."
Incredibly, at the article ends with another quote from Amy Kudwa where she was quoted as saying that she wasn't sure how many missing items have been recovered. I take scant comfort that the final sentence of the article notes that:
"...a TSA jacket was found last month at a San Antonio thrift store and turned over to the agency."
I am very concerned that well over one thousand uniforms and identity cards have gone missing for one reason or another and it would appear that no one even knows how many may have been recovered. Other officials quoted in the article apparently share my concerns. The point is that uniforms and identification cards can be used to bypass security systems and provide terrorists and criminals with access to security areas
