A Department of Public Safetyled gang task force is laying the last bits of groundwork for its newest mission of enforcing immigration laws.
DPS and the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement leaders are scheduled to meet Jan. 30 to discuss joint projects.
Chief among the topics will be how they can best use a federal law that allows local police to enforce immigration.
“We’re still formulating it and it looks very promising,” said Alonzo Pena, special agent in charge of ICE in Phoenix.
DPS added immigration enforcement to its task force formerly known as GITEM, or Gang Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission, after the Arizona Legislature provided money last year for 100 officers, 50 to work gangs and 50 for immigration, said Lt. Andy Vasquez, who runs the central Arizona division of the task force.
