Prosecutors filed murder charges today against a landscaper, alleging that he repeatedly hit his boss on the head with a pickax.
Ernesto Hernando Avalos, 23, of Santa Ana faces 16 years to life in prison if he is convicted of murder with an enhancement for the personal use of a deadly weapon, prosecutors said.
He was arrested Monday after police found him bloodied in the back yard of a home in the Turtle Ridge neighborhood of Irvine. The body of Woo Sung Park, 44, of Rancho Santa Margarita lay nearby, police said.
Park, who owns Blue Bird Landscape, picked up Avalos and another man in Santa Ana on Monday morning, police said.
Authorities do not know if Avalos is a legal resident. He remains hospitalized because police had to use force to arrest Avalos, prosecutors said.
He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail. His arraignment date has not been set.
