Police are looking for a ring of suspects traveling through Oregon who cashed about $100,000 worth in stolen and forged payroll checks at nearly a dozen businesses, according to Salem Detective Michael Korcek.
A group of Hispanic suspects were involved in burglaries of construction-related businesses in Salem, Stayton, Aumsville, Klamath Falls and Oregon City in September and October of 2006, police said.
Payroll checkstock was stolen from each company, forged and cashed at account holders’ banks. Some burglaries were undetected by business owners until the checks returned back as forgeries.
In most cases, businesses reported to police that two or more Hispanic men asked about employment and spend time within the location a few days before the forgeries were discovered. The men seen leaving in a gold-colored vehicle, similar to a Ford Expedition with Oklahoma license plates.
In November 2006, forged and stolen payroll checks were cashed in the Eugene area. The suspects have also been seen in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, California in December 2006.
On Jan. 19, this group returned to the Salem area and cashed stolen checks from two similar local businesses
