McALLEN — South Texas is a hotbed for identity theft, and law enforcement officials say illegal immigration is to blame.
Residents in the McAllen area are twice as likely to be victims of identity theft as residents of Dallas or San Antonio, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Among U.S. metro areas with populations of 100,000 or more, the McAllen area had the third highest incidence of identity-theft complaints in the country last year, the FTC reported in a survey released this week.
The ranking is based on the number of complaints per 100,000 people.
This is the first year the commission has compiled information from cities, and the entire South Texas region fared poorly.
The Brownsville-Harlingen and Laredo metro areas also ranked among the top 10, while the Corpus Christi area came in at No. 29.
"If the rate is that high, I would suspect that it’s because of our proximity to the international border with Mexico and the collateral issues with illegal immigration," said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.
