Amarillo, TX - Oklahoma's illegal immigration problem could soon be getting some new attention from Uncle Sam. We've learned the U.S. Border Patrol is planning random checkpoints at the airports and bus stations in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. But, how serious is the problem? 8 On Your Side investigator Charles Ely traveled to Texas for a first-hand look at the border struggle and its impact on our state.
Last month, a van crowded with illegal aliens crashed near Elk City, killing seven of them. Federal agents say they are surprised it doesn't happen more often. We joined border patrol agents as they took to the streets and highways, looking for illegals. We were absolutely amazed by the amount of human smuggling and how much of a danger it poses to Oklahoma.
In a pursuit at 100-miles an hour on a Texas interstate, the problem quickly comes into focus.
"2-7-5 Papa Papa Yankee! A Texas plate."
It took the border patrol less than 30 minutes to spot a minivan with foggy windows, riding low on its tires. But, we're not along the Mexican border. We are on Interstate 40, not far from Oklahoma.
Amarillo is known for a number of unique things -- like 72-ounce steaks and Cadillacs buried in the high plains. But, there is a lot more to it. This is the first place west of Tulsa you can find federal agents patrolling the interstates looking for illegal aliens, drug smugglers and terrorists.
