KINGSVILLE - For this country to undergo comprehensive immigration reform within the next few years, corresponding legislation must pass before this fall, said Juan Hernandez, a former Mexican cabinet member in the Vicente Fox administration.
Hernandez, the first American to serve in the Mexican cabinet, advocated immigration reform and encouraged students to voice their support for reform during a lecture at Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Thursday.
"These are historic moments," he said. "It looks like if we really push in the next few months, we'll have comprehensive immigration reform," Hernandez said, referring to a bill sponsored by U.S. Senators John McCain and Ted Kennedy that would provide a pathway to citizenship for the 12 million undocumented immigrants in this country.
If the bill isn't passed by August, Hernandez said, it may not be passed until after the 2008 presidential election.
Hernandez, who is currently the president for the Organization for Hispanic Advancement Inc., said most Americans support immigration reform as long as it includes certain criteria including screening undocumented immigrants for security purposes, and requiring them to pay taxes and learn English.

NO AMNESTY, PATHWAY TO CITIZENSHIP, OR GUEST-WORKER PLANS! The vast majority of American citizens (80+%) do not want any of those plans. We simply want immigration laws already on the books, to be enforced! |
