A 27-year-old Salvadoran immigrant was sentenced to 29 years to life in prison for raping a teenager who was walking to school last year.
Jorge Ek-Luna, who followed the court proceedings through a translator, was sentenced in Marin County Superior Court Thursday. He will be eligible for parole in 21 years, authorities said.
Judge Terrence Boren added four years to the normal 25 years to life sentence for the crime because Ek-Luna used a broken bottle to threaten the 15-year-old San Rafael freshman on Feb. 13, 2006.
Boren dismissed the defense's contention that Ek-Luna was drunk and didn't know what he was doing. The judge described Ek-Luna as a "danger to society" and said the crime was every "parent's nightmare."
Neither the victim nor members of the victim's family appeared in court Thursday.
