A conference involving the top security officials in North America took an ironic turn yesterday when two protesters interrupted a news conference involving U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Homeland Security boss Michael Chertoff.
Two women who had blended in among journalists walked in front of podiums shared by nine Canadian, American and Mexican ministers and secretaries before security (the burly type) quickly whisked the pair away.
The women's beef was a lack of democratic input at the gathering called the Security and Prosperity Partnership. The meetings, hosted by Canada's Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day and Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay, discussed a range of issues including border security, plans for avian and pandemic influenza and energy issues.
Like many other international partnerships, such as G8 summits, the group has drawn criticism for its lack of public input.
"In terms of meeting with civil society groups, that type of thing happens in different venues on a host of other occasions," Day told reporters after the interruption. Despite the agreement to move forward on several common initiatives yesterday, MacKay conceded that Canada and the U.S. continue to disagree over the case of Canadian Maher Arar.
