NYC Street Vendors Protest Recent Confiscations, Fines

NEW YORK -- Earlier this month, workers from the city's police, health and sanitation departments showed up at Jose Luis Marin's vending carts in the Bronx.
They confiscated his two ice cream and fruit carts and issued him a $1,000 fine because he didn't have a proper permit. A week later, they confiscated the carts again and issued another $1,000 fine.
"He says he feels bad," said Gloribel Vega, a street vendor activist who interpreted for Marin, a 40-year-old immigrant from Mexico. "He feeds his family with that cart."
On Thursday, Marin and his wife joined about 75 other vendors to protest what they say has been an "alarming" number of recent cart confiscations and "exorbitant" fines.
The protesters, who say they can't get the proper permits because of legal limits on the number the city can issue, also implored the City Council to pass legislation that would eliminate the caps.

Why is it that every law they find they break and feel that they should be exempt from them? Countless lives at stake with food posioning and diseases. But, that does not seem to matter, they want their food cart off the record too. |

| Oh, Boo Hoo!! All cities need to conduct raids on guys like that all over the place. Those portable 'eateries' are popping up on every corner or abandoned lot in Texas. There's no amount of money anyone could pay me to eat any of the food they serve there!! They do not hook up to any city water mains, they simply attach a garden hose to a nearby faucet (without permission). Can you imagine eating at one of those place, getting sick, and trying to sue for food poisioning?? Good Luck!! Some actually have city permits, but I bet if they did more regular checks on these places, inspectors would probably find copies or expired inspection sheets. I guess that's why they are on wheels, so they can run before getting ticketed by the health inspector. |
