Las Vegas bans feeding the homeless
LAS VEGAS, July 25 (UPI) -- A new Las Vegas ordinance bans anyone from feeding homeless people in city parks.
The ordinance defines "homeless" as a "person whom a reasonable ordinary person would believe to be entitled to apply for or receive assistance," the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
Officials say the ordinance is aimed at "mobile soup kitchens" that feed the homeless in parks. Mayor Oscar Goodman told the newspaper the soup kitchens have good intentions, but may be keeping the homeless from getting the help they need.
City residents also complain the homeless are making parks unusable by others, the newspaper said.
But the American Civil Liberties Union promises a legal challenge to the new ordinance.
"I've heard of some rather strange and extreme measures from other cities," attorney Allen Liechtenstein said. "I've never heard of something like this. It's mind-boggling."
